Many buildings constructed before 2000 may contain asbestos floor tiles, commonly used to reinforce vinyl and thermoplastic flooring. While intact tiles are low risk, cutting, sanding, or removing them can release hazardous fibres. Asbestos was favoured for its durability and fire resistance, particularly in pre-1980s buildings.
